New Year, New Choices: Preventing Youth Gambling in New York

A new year brings fresh goals, hopeful energy, and a chance to build healthy habits. In New York State, changing trends in gambling have also sparked important conversations about prevention, especially when it comes to youth. One of the most positive trends is the growing focus on education, connection, and community support to help young people make safe, informed choices.

Youth Exposure To Gambling

Youth gambling is a serious concern. With online games, sports betting ads, and social casino-style apps easy to access, young people may be exposed to gambling earlier than ever before. Even when money is not involved, these games can teach risky behaviors and make gambling feel normal. That is why prevention efforts are so important. By starting conversations early and offering healthy alternatives, families and communities can help youth build skills that last a lifetime.

Support Through Alternative Activities

Across the state, community outreach is making a difference. Parents, educators, and youth leaders are learning more about gambling harms and how to talk about them openly. Instead of avoiding the topic, more adults are asking questions, sharing facts, and pointing youth toward positive activities. These efforts help young people feel supported and empowered to make choices that protect their well-being.

Community support plays a key role in prevention. Many youths are discovering fun, meaningful ways to spend their time that do not involve gambling.

  • Sports teams, art and music programs, gaming clubs, and after-school activities give young people a sense of belonging and achievement.
  • Volunteering, youth leadership groups, and community service projects help teens build confidence while giving back.
  • Outdoor activities, fitness classes, creative writing, theater, and learning new skills like coding or cooking inspire developing artistry.

These experiences offer excitement, challenge, and social connection.

Collaborative Efforts

Working with local organizations is another powerful trend. Prevention specialists, youth programs, schools, faith communities, and recovery advocates are partnering to create safer environments. Together, they share resources, host educational events, and provide trusted spaces where youth can talk openly about stress, peer pressure, and decision-making. When neighbors and organizations work together, they build stronger, healthier communities for young people to grow.

Regional and statewide organizations are leading these efforts. The Problem Gambling Resource Centers (PGRCs)provide free, confidential support in every region and work closely with schools, youth programs, and families to strengthen prevention efforts. The New York Council on Problem Gambling (NYCPG) has guided this work since 1994. They strive to increase awareness of gambling harm through education and community partnerships and connect individuals and families to help. These initiatives are supported by the New York State Office of Addiction Services and Supports (OASAS), which funds prevention, treatment, and recovery resources, including the HOPEline, a confidential service offering guidance and support for anyone concerned about gambling harms.
